One of the rites of passage for a child is losing their baby teeth. For many children, this can be a frightening experience. Some parents may wonder if they can pull their child’s loose tooth at home. In this blog post, we will explore the options for pulling a child’s loose tooth and when you should seek dental care.
A child’s mouth goes through many changes during the early years. The teeth begin to form before birth and the first teeth, called primary teeth, usually erupt around 6 months of age. By age 3, most children have a full set of 20 primary teeth. These primary teeth will eventually be replaced by permanent teeth. The process of losing primary teeth and getting permanent teeth is called exfoliation.
Most children begin to lose their primary teeth around age 6. It is not unusual for a child to lose their first tooth as early as age 4 or 5, or as late as age 7 or 8. The process of exfoliation can take several years to complete. All 20 primary teeth are usually not lost until around age 12.
The first permanent teeth to erupt are normally the first molars, which appear around age 6. The process of getting permanent teeth continues until around age 21. By that time, the adult mouth contains 32 permanent teeth.
The primary teeth are eventually replaced by permanent teeth because they are not as strong as the permanent teeth. The roots of the primary teeth begin to dissolve when the permanent teeth start to form in the jawbone. This makes the primary teeth loose and eventually they fall out.
You can pull your child’s loose tooth at home if the tooth is ready to come out and your child is cooperative.
By the time a baby tooth is loose, it’s held in place by only a small amount of tissue, Colgate explains. Children who are eager to lose these teeth may wiggle them out on their own with their fingers or tongues.
If your child wants help removing a loose tooth, then follow this tip:
Grasp the tooth with a clean tissue or gauze and give it a quick twist. When pulling a tooth at home, it’s important to be gentle. A tooth that is sufficiently loose will fall out with just a gentle squeeze.
If your child doesn’t want help, don’t try to pull out their tooth. Most baby teeth will eventually fall out on their own. If you’re concerned about a tooth that doesn’t seem to be falling out as it should, take your child to a dentist instead of trying to pull it out at home. As the AAP explains, your child’s dentist may recommend extracting it.
Colgate explains that some children may feel scared or anxious about the loss of their baby teeth. After you’ve pulled the baby tooth, reassure your child that losing their baby teeth is a completely normal part of growing up. Together, you can then place their lost tooth under their pillow for the tooth fairy’s reward.
Dental Care for Children
While you can pull your child’s loose tooth at home, it is still important to seek dental care for your child. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children see a dentist by age 1 or within 6 months after the first tooth erupts. Regular dental visits are important because they allow the dentist to examine your child’s mouth, teeth, and gums. The dentist can also provide guidance on oral hygiene and dietary habits.
Dental Care at Home
You can also help your child to maintain good oral hygiene at home. You should brush your child’s teeth twice a day with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Futher, you should floss your child’s teeth once a day. While your child is young, they should be supervised and assisted when brushing and flossing their teeth.
It is also important to limit your child’s intake of sugary snacks and drinks. You should also avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle of milk, formula, or juice. Doing so can increase the risk of tooth decay.
