Why is thumb sucking common?

Thumb sucking is most common in infants and young children. It is often a soothing or comforting activity for them. Some children suck their thumb out of habit, even when they are not feeling anxious or stressed. If your child is older than four and still sucking their thumb, it may be more difficult to break the habit.
